Ambience Cafe Bar, 40 Gillygate, York
Ambience Cafe Bar at 40 Gillygate in York provided lunch during our walk into the city from the university today. Having worked up an appetite by taking the long way round through Rowntree Park, we were ready to relax over some good food and drink. We sat outside in the walled garden which is overlooked by York Minster where we would hear the bells chime every 15 minutes. Our order was quickly taken. I went for a vegetable soup starter £3.50, while Dusty had some Nacho’s with cheese £2.50. For mains I opted for a chilli beef baked potato and Dusty went for a home made pork burger, both priced around £5.00 each. Drinks were equally good value; Becks for myself and Sprite for Dusty.
The garden was small but quite nice. The downside were the plastic tables and chairs, which I tend to hate. Paper napkins were in use, but this was to be expected given the prices charged. My vegetable soup was good, and Dusty’s nachos were fine covered in freshly melted cheese. My chilli beef covered baked potato was filling and tasty. I’m not sure Dusty was to impressed with his main though and left most of it.
I ordered a second Becks and found a bottle of Stella arriving some 10 minutes later. Slow and the wrong order didn’t impress.
We perhaps wouldn’t go back, but if you are looking for somewhere to sit, in relative peace for a cheap good value light lunch, then this is a reasonable place.
